Hello,
I spent hours crashing not only my own SL client trying to start a movie on a group land but also everybody who were there trying to watch the movie. Anybody else having problems with viewing video streams. This is a critical error and is supposed to be one the things that separate SL from the other competitors.

I have this happen once in a while, but I would reinstall Quicktime (version 7 out now and seems to work fine)...but since everyone...

Which stream is it? if it is affecting everyone, then they might be doing something else in the stream (flash, other quicktime features) that SL might not support.

Nope, the same movie works fine on other occasions. It's just the unstability that is mind boggling. From my end, I cannot understand why it happens. First I thought that may be the version of the installed Quicktime player was the culprint. But ruled that out once things work on and off.

p.s I use the latest version of Quicktime.

I've been trying to do some testing with this as there were some problems although random with 1.6 as well as in 1.7 preview, some say its fast clicking the play and stop, im more inclined to think either a badly encoded movie or even a bad network tranmission or lost packet has caused a glitch in a frame of the movie causing the quicktime player to pass something bad back into sl, either graphics wise or sound wise which causes it to crash.

If its happening to everybody only some of the time i'd be inclinded to think packetloss from the movie server to the viewer causing a glitch, which is very hard to test and im not sure how the client deals with that.

Quicktime induced crash due to random packet loss?

Hmm.. I am not inclined to think it is due to some random even such as packet loss. Even if this is the case, there should have been something in the code to deal with this issue instead of causing the whole client to bail out. I consistently crashed the client at 4 to 5 mins interval on 3 different machines. The other thing which is interesting is that when I was pressing play on my client that would cause the clients on the other machines to crash as well. Since the three machines had different graphics card, this rules out driver issues as well.

Pressing the play button in the viewer shouldnt really have any communication with the other people in the sim, all it really does it tell the quicktime plugin to play the movie, what might be happening is that its causing load on the streaming server and its causing loss which will get sent out to everybody if its under load etc.

What im testing at the moment, that in early tests is pointing in the right way, is that having a different texture to whats on the media screen in about land, ie so you still have the controls but there is no matching texture to view the video doesnt cause any or much fewer crashes.

Edit: Well can already rule that out i think, just had two pc's one ati one nvidea, crash at the same time, using this method, no picture being displayed on parcel, just switching url.
