Unicode in Notecards

So I've got a notecard with some french text in it, such as:

apprécié

I can see the special characters in the notecard fine.
But when I read the notecard from a script, and print them out (via SAY or IM), the special characters are gone. Not replaced by blocks or something else. Just gone.

I can otherwise see those accented characters fine in SL chat line.
This happens both on my Mac, and on XP.
Both in the normal client, and in first look.

I've tried searching the forum and docs on unicode and notecards, and it seemed to say this should work.

Any ideas?

It does cut and paste into the notecard. And it looks fine in there (on both the mac and the PC). Its just when I try to read the notecard from a script and print it out, that the accented characters disappear.
