I have seen this done numerous times over the past few months and am wondering how some are able to reply to IM's while not being logged into SL. Is it a glitch, or an actuality? If this has already been discussed it should be stickied, lol. It would be a great boon to SL to be able to IM someone from outside SL besides already being able to see if your friends are online from the official website. Thanks

if an IM is sent to you while you are offline, and you have your offline messages sent to email, you can reply to them from your email (with 48 hours i think). you can't start a convo offworld though. (barring some scripty things i'm not aware of, anyway).

I have tried that a couple times, replying to an IM emailed to me while I was offline. It didnt work, but then again it might have been after the time period you specified so that might be why it didn't work. I'll try it again the next offline IM I recieve via email.

A major reason we haven't yet added the ability to initiate a conversation from outside of Second Life is to avoid the potential to spam our residents. One positive aspect of the current system is that the person you message has to start the conversation with you, before you can email them back.

Hm.... well what about making it so only people listed as your friend (NOT your groups) could send you an IM from offline? Is that doable by any stretch? I still kinda like the idea of the SL-lite type thing where IM is the only function, so you can keep in touch with your friends (then again I am biased because I'm moving to the land of crappy dialup in less than a month, for an unknown period of time, and I'll be missing out on SL for the duration).

I agree. If the flow of messages has to restricted, make it so that at least people on your friends list can message you while not in-game. generally saying that the system is in place so as not to spam residents, hasn't played SL that much obviously, lol. If you belong to even ONE group, you will be spammed by IMs. This is a matter of convenience, not a matter of inconvenience.
