when i go afk and type in afk in main chat my avatar goes in away mode for 30 seconds and then drops out of away before i can get up to use the restroom.

It sounds like you are doing the following
1. Setting Away status from the World menu,
2. Leaving Away status by virtue of typing something
3. What you are typing triggers a gesture that includes the AFK slumped over animation, or a scripting object runs the AFK animation

I think what you should do is

1. Set Away status on the World menu.

I think what you should do is

1. Set Away status on the World menu.

it's most likely an ao, which constantly animates the avatar.
