Under winex on linux, when I try to install the new version 1.5.8, I get an error after choosing the installation directory: Cant initialise plugin directory. (older versions still install successfuly)

Has any linux user here gotten the same problem? And did you find a workaround?

SL 1.5.8 Linux/Wine installation Solution
12-14-2004 16:06
Change your wine config file to point 'Temp' directory to a directory on a VFAT partion, this will allow SL to install under wine. My guess then is that this is a file name case sensitivity problem.

reply about this bug:
[rt.lindenlab.com #9420]

Hi Psyke,

Thanks for the info...this is good to know and will pass the info to the
developers. Of course, since we technically don't support Linux at this
time (that's gonna change eventually...when exactly, not sure just
yet)...regardless, keep this info coming in even though technically we
don't support Linux =).

Regards,
Kona

Your original support request:
------------------------------
Linux/Wine install fails if temp dir isnt on windows format partion. Changing my wine's Temp dir from EXT3 partition to VFAT partition allows SL 1.5.8 to install. This might be a case sensitivity issue.

That didn't fix it for me.

Edit: Partial fix -- run the installer while the "temp" directory is the current working directory. Now I'm getting an error "You appear to be using a 'limited' account. You must be an 'administrator' to install Second Life."

Edit: I've fixed it, and damn but it's awkward:

1) Run the installer. When it gets to the point where it is asking for an install path, switch to an xterm.
2) Change to the temp directory, and look for a file with a name of the pattern "ns?????.tmp" Create 26 folders with names of the pattern "ns?b???.tmp", where the first ? is a letter between 'a' and 'z', the last three ? are the last three in the original filename, except that the last character is increased by one.
3) Switch back to the installer, and continue through the installation procedure. At some point, it will install a file called "UserInfo.dll" into one of the folders you've created. That's the reason for creating those 26 folders -- the installer won't create the one it needs itself, and there doesn't appear to be a pattern to what folder it will choose.

Edit: And just for the record, the crash reporter still crashes under Linux.

Thanks Psyke, it worked.

I tried the 26 directory trick too, but it didn't work. Maybe it depends too much on the system.

No luck with either method. :/ I also tried 777'ing everything wine had access to. Fail. root install, fail.

heck, I can't even install for Windows. I wonder if this is related. Since becoming a Linux nut-job, I've become even more reluctant than I ever was to sign on as Administrator. But the latest version is telling me that I have to be Admin to install the latest version. This hasn't happened (for me) since the pre-beta version.
