Okay, so the new patch came out .. with the new viewer. I've downloaded it and its installed. I log into the world only to find that it takes 10 minutes to load my clothing. Strange. OOps, there it goes - it just crashed.
I relog, try to take off all clothing and put some basic stuff on. OOps. There it goes again. Crash. After the third crash, I give up to go get a coffee. Back again. Finally, I get to put on a pair of jeans and some shoes. Oh know! Where did that cool new shirt I bought go? It's gone? Bleh.
Funny. I don't know why I am paying a premium fee to own land in an environment where the client is consistantly crashing.. this behavior was going on way before the last patch as well. I'm new to SL, only since Feb. of this year - While I love the essence of what it is about, I'm beginning to hate the experience of it. In fact, it's driving me to log in less and reconsider actually building and interacting more.
Also, I just got a top-of-the-line Mac Pro (quad core) 4gb ram with the ATI Radeon X1900 connected to a T1 for personal use. Guess what, even with all that firepower, I'm still lagging all over. Even with great pings to the sim. (actually, I didn't really think it would help that much).
Soo.. Is it ever going to get better? Perhaps the Linden's have bitten off more than they can chew. Please, someone tell me a third-party commercial viewer that has better stability is on the horizon. Or perhaps even an open source one? It doesn't seem that the Lindens are able to manage the stability of the client and the scalability concerns of the back-end grid without causing severe disruption to the user.
Maybe I'm just new, but it would seem to me that after all these years of SL operating there would be way better stability in the viewer client than what we have today. OH well.. At least the crashes look wonderful on my new 30" Apple cinema display. Sigh.
Very fustrated and on the verge of ending my Second Life,
