Earlier tonight I noticed this thread, "Second Life 1.9.1 release scheduled for Wednesday, May 10, 2006" in Announcemments and noticed this:
"Please note: due to the nature of the graphical improvements in 1.9.1, we *strongly* encourage all Residents to update to the latest drivers for their video card. For help doing this, please see http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-ind...hUpdateGraphics."
I tend to check for new drivers every 6 months or so and realised I really hadn't this year. So... I went over to ATI's site... finally ending up on the latest driver page:
"Catalyst 6.4 Windows XP - Driver Download"
(pulled out of the frameset the addy is: https://support.ati.com/ics/support/KBAnswer.asp?questionID=640 ).
I download and installed.
Then, I started SL and was greeted with this message:
"Your ATI RADEON graphics driver on this computer is out of date.
This is a piece of software that controls your graphic card.
Old drivers can cause 3D graphics programs like SecondLife to run slowly or crash.
We strongly recommend upgrading to the "Catalyst 3.8" driver, available for free download from ATI.
Would you like to go the SecondLife drivers web page?"
Of course if you clicked the "Yes" to go to the web page, absolutely nothing happened. SL just quits and no web browser is launched. Thankfully SL started up for me, but I do have to wonder about the out of date driver message?
And... I also have to wonder about 1.9.1 and graphical improvements when my SL viewer can't recognise the latest driver for my video card.
Any input from Tech sort of Lindens as to "what" is going on here would be helpful.

Da Edit:
A few hours later after checking that SL seemed to be running "OK", I couldn't sleep so got up to login and see if my Partner were around.
I attempted to start SL but got a immeadate message about such and such was trying to read such and such memory and there was a error. Of course SL wouldn't start and the Crash Reporter popped up. I sent one and tried restarting.
No go.
Rebooted my computer after throwing away SL's cache and still couldn't get up and running. Went through a couple more times and started to think of tracking down my old driver's installer (which I still have). Then I remembered window's System Restore thingie.
Took my computer back 23 hours, got my older driver back and logged into SL fine.
