No, unfortunately SL requires several features that only Windows 2000/XP have. Windows 95/98/Me just can't do it. You'll need to install a newer version of Windows if you want to use SL.

Win98 is an old OS. Some people still use it, but it does indeed lack features seen only in 2k and XP. Thankfully, if your computer's hardware and current software can handle it, there are upgrade CD's around that can get XP or 2k set on your system. I can't recall where to look though. And it's probably only a short term fix.

I myself am waiting to see if I can find a driver upgrade for my laptop that will allow it to run properly instead of freeze prior to the log-in screen. Although my simple answer is to just get a new laptop.

That depends entirely on the computer. Sometimes it has been shown that software no the computer being upgraded will not work with XP. In most software cases, it only means that it won't work if it's left in place during the upgrade and will have to be re-installed since XP would disable it to proceed. Other times it may be a critical obstacle that XP can't get past and thus will abort at that time.

On the other hand, some hardware won't work on XP either because of it's configuration or lack of a driver that is compatible. For example, an old PC I used to use was designed in such a way that it would only accept Win98 or ME. It sounds stupid, but the way it was build provided roadblocks to the upgrade. It used a 433Mhz Intel Celeron chip, and only had 64MB of RAM. That was block one. Block two was the modem not being compatible at all. Block three was some software that would need to be removed beforehand. And the final block was the case of the PC. The RAM couldn't be upgraded without ripping apart other important peices of the PC and thus a professional had to do it. It was built like an iMac.

What was it called? The "Gateway Astro". I am glad I got rid of it now.

So really, you just have to run a copy of MS's XP Upgrade Wizard. While the name is different here than on the MS website, the program they have is about 50MB and is the exact same one on the CD. It will give you a loose idea of what it can work with and what it hates.

And of course, if you'd rather avoid that route, the simple answer of course is to get a new system, but obviously for you that is a problem unto itself in more than one way. In such a case borrowing someone else's computer or a library terminal may be better even though they have their own rules in most cases. I would definately not advise using a library internet computer though because of the public nature they have.

I think SL's problem with 98 that it didn't have before 1.6 is that it has some sort of.. text thingy... or something... I think that's what I read on another thread when 1.6 was coming out, and 98 users couldn't handle it.

Then the most simple fix is to either upgrade, which has it's own flaws, or just get a new system.

hmmmmmmmmmmmm isn't there a way to make a patch so that it disables all the stuff that makes it not work on win98 yes?

Nope. A patch would require a lot of researching into what Win98's limits are and which features of SL are asking too much of such an old OS. I wouldn't think it is worth the effort to just patch it.

You can start saving though, or apply for financing. I'm looking for a new laptop STILL, which I can afford. It's kind of hard to get one for less than $700 that has what SL wants.
