I make hair... I sell hair... But I can't recolour or retexture hair!

Everytime I recolour/retexture a linked set of hair prims I lag out... the client doesn't 'crash' so to speak, i just can't move my av or do anything else. I have to exit SL, wait a few mins like I would if i had crashed and then relog, to find that only a hand full of prims from the hair have changed!
ALSO!!!
About 30% of the time, when i try to select a new texture, the texture window cycles through totally random textures at a rate of about 5 textures a second! even when i exit edit mode this continues on the prim/prims. Once again I have to relog.

My computer also reboots itself every 15 mins or so, some nights it's rebooting every 5 mins! And this ONLY happens when SL is running.

This hinders my play immensly and makes me VERY frustrated. I send bug reports CONSTANTLY, so much so i don't even get a reply anymore. When I did get replies, i was always told to 'check the FAQ' or 'this is automated, please do not reply'.

I don't know how much longer I can continue to use this program if this is the way it will always be for me.

hehe, i had this odd thing with texture picker to, it totally freaks out and start random choosing textures , dont even have to touch mouse and it scrolls all over the place (logictech?)

As for you rebooting of computer when you have SL up, checked vid card / cpu temperature when you start SL?, they go alot alot higher then on your idling time.

Been so hot where i live i wonder when it was about to shut down (other machine cant even start SL without going belly up right now - heat - )

cpu,gpu,mem,pc specs?

Yeah, like Thili suggests, post your stats. If you have a lower-end system, it's possible the alpha textures are kicking your computer's butt, so to speak.

ahh, i'd never thought of the over heating thing...

i have a relativly new comp, it was custom made and the man who did it ripped me... microsoft contact me regulary telling me i have a faulty mother board or somthing :/

but yea, its been very warm here recently (and now that you mention it, the comp has only really started to reboot so much since this heat started) and my computer does create A LOT of heat in the room. sl works fine (but slow) on my older computer, it's beside a window, this 1 isnt (lol)

i have a packard bell mouse. could it be cause im in ireland that i the textures r going crazy and the cause being lag?

Yeah, it definitely sounds like you're overheating. Spontaneous rebooting is almost always either electrical or thermal, and if it starts happening in summer, it's a safe bet your computer's overheating. If you can take the side panel off your computer and point a large fan into the opening, that can sometimes cool down your system sufficiently during the summer.

Lag shouldn't ever do anything like what you're describing in the texture picker. I suspect it's probably just some flaky SL bug that hasn't yet been fixed, but it could be a client-side issue. I'd have to see it in person, but it's possible the overheating problem could be causing it. I'm thinking that it may not actually be switching textures, but as your video card overheats, it's swapping between ones it's already loaded.

Has this texture problem been ongoing, or is it new, since the rebooting problem started?

its been happening since the rebooting... everything has started happening since the rebooting started to occur. but i cant understand why i totally lag out completely everytime i try to retexture/recolour hair :/ i can retexture buildings etc, but not hair, is it because theres so many tiny prims all clustered together that are quite tortured?

Well, a more likely explanation is that you're texturing the hair with alpha textures, and that's what's doing it. Do you get the same slowdown if you apply a hair texture to another object? Is it that you're applying the same texture to multiple objects all at once?

If you know anyone more trustworthy who's good with computers, could you get them to find out what CPU, video card, motherboard and RAM you have? Check the power supply too. If any of your internal cooling fans are defective, it could definitely explain the problems you're seeing.

I've noticed problems with heavy (mult-prim) objects. Basically the entire object will disappear from view (can't even grab to rotate pan. Occassionally a few prims will still be visible, usually the being updated. If I had to make a guess, I'd say the sim was trying to reupdate every single prim.

but that doesn't crash it. what DOES crash it is when I try to select a texture on a specific face of the object.. sl will hang and I get the crash logger. But I can usually just log back in. I guess I'm lucky that my machine doesn't restart itself, or go completely apesh*t at random. it's a just a slow computer in an open-air case.
