Is this a bug, known issue, or just a fact of life? I thought I was losing it, but I took some pics and discovered that Im not crazy afterall. Well, at least in regards to this issue.
I recently took a great deal of care in planting some trees. The ground texture where I am working is both rocky and grassy, so I made sure to plant my trees on the grass, since it doesnt make sense that they would grow on the rocky ledges. Well, I noticed a couple of trees were on the rocks. I shrugged it off and moved them off the rocks and onto the grass. Later on I logged in and they were on rocks again. I logged off and logged in again and they were in the grass.
Why are the ground textures moving? Here are three pics I took of the same area. I have not moved any of the trees in these pics. It is plainly obvious the ground textures move around from one login to the next. Whats going on?
The first pic is basically how I planted them, all in the grass. The second pic, the ridge in the forground is almost all rocky. And, in the third pic, almost all the trees are on the rocks.

Duuude... Loki, whoa, at first I would have attributed it to the magical powers of you being an 8-ft. tall orange demon and all, but something strange DOES appear to be afoot here.
What are the exact coords? I wanna scope out the place myself and see if the same thing happens for me. El weirdo.

It is my forest preserve in Penrith. This particular spot is maybe 60m SW of the center of the sim. You will recognize my neighbors builds when you get there.

No, you are not on drugs. I've seen the same thing happen in Zoe. I put down a dirt textured prim to match the dirt land it was on, and when I came back the next day it was on grass. Now I wonder if all avs are seeing the same ground textures at the same time, or if there is some degree of randomness on the client side.
This sounds like a good question for the Hotline forum.

Okay, I was just there a trio of times -- and I'm seeing the same... er... differences. None of my own screenies matched up to appear the same as yours, Loki.
It'd be kind of funny to assemble a bunch of people there and have them all take snapshots for Snapzilla to compare or something. On one hand, it's nice to have some "random" organic variation, but this sounds potentially unwanted.

i used to have a beach, one day i started noticing that the 'grass' was moving much further down into the 'sand' part. i think i was standing up higher facing the water. so i walked down to the water and turned around, and the line between sand and grass had moved up much higher than it was from the top. after pacing back and forth a bunch and getting someone else to confirm that i wasn't losing my mind i reterraformed a bit and it looked more normal.
even odder is that i built a looong water fall for a park in a new sim about 2 months ago, the ground was a mixture of rock and grass textures. a few weeks ago i flew by to see how the park had changed, unfortunately the park was gone and inexplicably the land was now all rock and no grass.
land textures do odd things

well i noticed how the client does this a couple months ago, was playing with the clients alpha gradient textures. The steath textures (textures that hide things behind them) are actualy used by the client to do interesting things, like the ground. If you mess around with the viewerart.ini file you can get it to screw up the rendering of the ground and it will appear to look like an ever changing fingerprint. It is really cool.

Screw with the game files? Most likely i'll change something and screw it all up.

From: nimrod Yaffle Screw with the game files? Most likely i'll change something and screw it all up. At which point you uninstall SL, reinstall it, and everything is back to normal. SL is one of the best programs for messing around with, since everthing important is stored on the Linden Lab servers.

My steak keeps moving off the grill in my diner. I thought it was a sign that it was done.
