It sounds like the downloader might be broken. Can you uninstall SL and download a fresh copy directly from the website? (See "downloads" at the top of this page.)

The automatic updater is playing up. If you download a new copy of the client from http://secondlife.com//downloads/index.php it will update itself.
You don't need a make a new avatar or anything, so don't worry. |

EDIT: And not that i dont believe it will work... but does anyone else have any ideas??? maybe a linden would be kind enough to respond? As has already been stated, you won't have to "make a new character" or pay any fees. No one has explained why though, so allow me. Your "character" as you call it is your account with Second Life. The account itself has absolutely nothing to do with the software on your computer. For an analogy, think of it like your bank account. Just as you don't have to open a new bank account every time you use a different ATM machine, you also don't have to open a new Second Life account just because you changed software versions. As long as you enter your account name and password, you can log into your Second Life account from any computer that has SL installed on it and your "character" will be the same, as will your inventory, all your builds, etc. This is true regardless of how many times SL has been uninstalled and reinstalled locally. In fact, you could erase everything on your computer, and then as soon as you re-installed your operating system and your SL client, you'd be good to go. Nothing that has to do with your "character" is stored on your computer. All of it is stored on the SL servers at Linden Lab. The SL software on your machine is simply a viewer that allows you to see the SL world, similar to the way in which your web browser allows you to see the interenet. That's all. Hope that helped. ![]() _____________________

Yeah, that's why SL needs so much bandwidth -- everything's stored on the server. Glad to hear things are working better now.
