We have a bug presently that causes that for everyone. Leave it, and eventually it should connect. They plan a 6 hour shutdown on Thursday to correct the problem.

The problem is worse than just being slow at preparing inventory.

I just let my login process occur and instead of succeeding after a long wait it produced the "our best efforts" message. Last night I spent hours on failed logins attemps in which it either produced that message or just reverted to the initial connect screen. A number of these failed attempts made it through the preparing inventory stage but failed to progress through the connecting to region part of the process.
A number of people are having a worse problem than just a few minute wait at the preparing inventory process. They are having a worse problem than a 45 minute wait at the preparing inventory stage. They are having the problem of being completey unable to connect despite giving the system all the time it wants and retrying for hours.
My second attempt to login has also failed with the "our best efforts" message.
It would be nice if responses to reports of login problems displayed an awareness that many of those who are reporting problems are aware of the queue system being expected to take several minutes and are reporting the more serious problems that I am having.

I second this. I've tried 4 times in a row now (waiting to clear the queue) and get dumped with the 'our best efforts' message as well. 20 minutes wasted on an attempt to log in...Time to go do something else- it's likely busted again. -Bone

I think the Lindens are aware of it now... at least, it was being discusses in the irc channel, and several Lindens were present. Apparantly it makes Phoenix a very sad panda. Anyway, my appologies for not knowing when I originally replied. It is a known issue though, and I suspect they're doing all they can to correct it.

Well I've been trying to get in for close to two hours now. Hopefully those Lindens in IRC will leave IRC and fix something permanantly.

There's a scheduled downtime on Thursday for just that reason.
