Would changing the command in the shortcut to this work?

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\newview.exe" -port 1863

Or is that port number too darn low?

Nope, sorry. The network you are on has decided that you shouldn't be playing SL, and there's very little that we can do about it. You should talk to your network admin.

I've been trying to get this in the FAQ at http://secondlife.com/faq.php:

What network ports does Second Life use?

Second Life needs to connect to ports 443/TCP, 12034/UDP, 12036/UDP, and 13000-13050/UDP. You should configure your firwall to allow outbound traffic on those ports, and related inbound traffic.

Kyrah,

This probably isn't feasible for you, but in case it is I'll mention it anyway.
There are VPN products you could use to create a tunnel over one of the ports that are open to you, to a machine with unrestricted access. Then you could access SL via the tunnel.

I did this for quite a while; my former ISP offered a VPN service called L2TP that ran on port 1701. It was a bit slower from the tunnel overhead, but it was a whole lot better than nothing.

Thanks Mark! Back in June when I signed on, I opened a much wider range per an outdated forum response. With this info, I can close some down. Though I don't recall enabling 443? yet I still connect without any problems other than the usual ATI freezes.

443 is https; most firewalls allow that already, but some really paranoid people don't.

In trying to enable the built in firewall on my DSL box (HomePortal 1000c by 2Wire, Service offered through Earthlink), on the 13000-13050UDP entry, I got this message. The total number of ports to be forwarded for all applications cannot exceed 64. For a given application, the number cannot exceed 16.

The other three went in fine. any suggestion on how to enter this? Second Life runs fine, except sometimes I seem to loose port access and I have to reset my dsl box, then Start Menu > Run > ipconfig /release, Start Menu > Run > ipconfig /renew. Then reboot. Plus as of late, i've been dropping alot more. I"ve called Earthlink many times concerning the dropping. They assure me it's not them. I called 2Wire, and the responce is it's earthlink, not thier product. Would there be any suggestions at this point to help me solve this problem?

Mark,

I don't think those ports are accurate anymore. I configured my firewall with your numbers, but each time I tried to connect, I stalled out at "Connecting to Region." The curious thing is that I actually gained online status to other users (friends saw me pop online and off rapidly,) but I never got past the progress bar screen.

I eventually reverted to the old wide-open port range which let me get fully online again.

#%^#$%#$%#@$%@#$^#$^#@

DoteDote, you are correct, those ports are wrong. Well, one of them, anyway.

The correct port numbers are:
443/TCP, 12035/UDP, 12036/UDP, and 13000-13050/UDP.

Honest. :)
