I have a modern PC equipped with a good ATI card. It works every application I throw at it. But when I log into SL and try and visit sites where there are interesting graphics (that's the attraction, right?) or where there are other people (that's the point, right?), performance grinds to a halt. In no time, I am jerking around instead of smooth movement, and I fin ally give up in disgust. I am fairly PC literate, and know my around most performance related issues - regular disk cleans, defrags, adware issues. But when I read the pages, and pages, and pages, and pages of suggestions and "tips" from people in this forum on what to do about "lag", I realise that any application which requires this much jigging of a PC to run it, is fundamently flawed! Am I going to spend hours trying all the suggestions to see if I can run SL better? No, I am not. If SL seriously wants to attract large members of non-IT professionals using modern but normal PC's, then they had better do something about their programme! Until then, I will find other less irritating forms of enjoyment! Bye all!

Think. Theres atleast 50,000 people on at any given time, there are so many zones, prims, scripts thats SOMETHINGS bound to go down, we're just lucky it IS lag, and not crash and erase. Honestly, thats same here, I can play some MMORPG's flawlessly, but this chugs up my system...
This is as fast as it can get, any faster and everything (Inluding characters) would be boxes or sticks, there wouldn't be scripts, and it'd be basically a virtual IM chat room with nothing to do.

Heh.. ive played SWG,CoH,WoW, and now AoC,, noprobs, not a hitch what so ever...on high settings too..but when it comes to sl the issue is different too.. lots of lag.. certain areas run smooth some horrible.. i can remember wheni started sl lag wasnt that big of a issue but with things such as scripts and prims advancing and getting more complex the system slows down.. so best advice is to turn your settings down some..u dont need to have a visually O, to enjoy yourself here.. u can just BS with people to have fun.. so the high graphics isnt allways needed. Other wise u will need a update if u want ultra high with no flaws.. and i put money down even some of the best systems have probs with sl still.. its the open source of it all.

in games like WOW everything is controlled: sound, music, 3d objects, animations, textures are already loaded in the program. There are no scripts. The big script is the program itself.
SL is different: it's constantly streaming sound, music, 3d objects, animations plus scripts all made by residents. A very little script can cause a lot of lag it is not well done. 1024x1024 textures, heavy particle effects everywhere.
All the whole thing streaming so you can watch it. That's why SL viewer is like 50 mb...how much does WOW program weights?

well i still blame SL i never had lag problems in activeworlds and everything is user created its just implemented better in AW they dont control all user content its more like the internet you connect to users servers. SL cant be the internet and control all the webservers, bad design. maybe opengrid will be better then we wont need SL at all

The big script is the program itself. That was my point exactly.. wow tech is kinda old now.. and SL keeps evolving due to the mass scripter we have here. and so on like u mentioned. plus on others they got different servers with a pop cap here im not sure how that works but i do know where all in touch nothing like people in different realms and such.

I think you are little late with your sentiment. That's not really all that new or shocking. That would be the reason that most of the Fortune 500's have yanked out in the past year. As a two year old avatar I have seen this come and go, I don't ever remember a time when the grid preformed well.
