Asus x700 graphics card problem

I hope this is the correct forum for this question!

I have a high-end PC including an Asus graphics card based on Radeon X700 chipset which I believe should be OK (Driver: 8.33.0.0).

It runs SL ok for about 5 minutes & then triggers the VPU recover (& crashes).

If I turn VPU recover off it crashes anyway!

2L is the only application that causes this problem.

Has anyone else seen (& fixed) this?

It's an: ASUS EAX700PRO/TVD256MB RADEON X700 PRO 256MB PCI-E DVI/TVO

If that helps.

Try the Omega Drivers. Many ATI users have seen good results with them in SL.

Spoke too soon!

Immediately after leaving this post (& going back to 2L) it crashed.

Now always crashes again - guess I was just (un)lucky for 4 hours!

OK - just tried that.

Crashed within about 2 minutes of starting 2L.

The error (as always) is that the graphics card has stopped accepting commands & has been reset.

Check your video cards fan, the fan died on my old sapphire x700, so I strapped on an old cpu fan on with zip ties. It only crashed and vpu recovered once every 24h after that.

Thanks - I looked at that.

The fan is running OK & the temperature & voltage (as reported by the Asus gcard monitoring utility) are all OK.

I've dumped the Omega drivers & gone back to the ATI drivers suggested by the earlier poster - I'm going to try turning off hardware acceleration & see what that does.

Any other ideas welcome!!

I reloaded the drivers suggested by Element Smirnov & turned Hardware Acceleration down 2 clicks from the right. Been on 2L all night - logged-in/out a couple of times & still working just fine!

Maybe that's fixed it!!

:*((( Grrrrr.

Still crashes eventually - & when it does it takes down windows so badly I have to roll-back to the last successful update.

So - I've given-up with my expensive Asus graphics card & I'm going to buy an nvidia card instead.

Anyone got any recommendations?

If money was no problem, what's the best card to run 2L (i.e I don't run any other graphics intensive applications so I don't want to over-buy).

Want to be able to drive 2 monitors though.

Anyone got anything they can recommend from experience?
