Avatar is totally black!

Last night my husband's avatar was somehow corrupted. We have tried absolutely everything we can think of - he's detached everything, cleared his cache, rebooted, etc. He's tried to apply a new skin and within 2 seconds the new skin also turns black. He can wear attachments and they are not affected, but any type of skin, including clothing totally blacks out.
We don't know what else to try, short of killing him off and starting over, which will royally suck because he'll lose all of his inventory that's not transferable.

Any ideas? HELP!!! PLEASE! Also, any ideas of how he got this way?

I've seen this before. You could try Ctrl + Alt + R to Rebake Textures…probably wont work though.
If you use a two monitor configuration you may need to set one as the primary and run SL just in that one…I’ve still had problems with a dual monitor setup. If that’s not it try putting one set of your shape, skin, hair, eyes and such in a single folder, then from your Inventory right click on that folder and select Replace Outfit.

This definately looks like a dual monitor problem.... he must be running SL on the secondary monitor. I had this when I went to dual monitors. Move SL to the primary monitor.

Very interesting that you both referred to it being a dual monitor problem. He does use dual monitors.

He seems to have gotten it fixed - putting everything into a folder as DaQbet suggested worked.

I don't quite understand how his monitor settings could affect how the rest of the world sees him. Weird.

Some day maybe I'll understand how all this works...until then, thanks for your help guys!!!

I won’t even try to guess why dual monitors are such a problem.
Glad the folder thing worked out. That’s a nifty trick shown to me by a Linden back when we had live help…sigh…they would actually come to you and…well those days are sadly missed.

geez don’t even try to understand how ALL this stuff works. Takes the fun out of it?
Just make note of the things that do work and share them with others when ever you can.

I had to miss an important meeting one evening when I started running double monitors because I looked exactly the same way.

Fiddling around with clothing and skins after a while returned me to normal, but it happened again not too long later.

Searched the forums and found the double monitor problem and have ran SL on the primary ever since.

Good news i hope!!! I had the black for 3 months before i finally found a solution that i hope works for you. I am in half screen most of the time to work on other stuf while in sl. I tried all the clear cache and rebakes that everyone talked about and it worked about 30% of the time at first. Then, the black set in for good. I had black on me 98% of the time in sl for 3 months. Not one linden could find a solution for me, i talked to a ton of techies who know computers and no one could fix it. I also threw a lot of inventory out thinking it was a corrupted file...nothing! One day a guy gave me the normal things to try. First clear cache and rebake as much as needed to clear the problem. HOWEVER, he said to go FULL SCREEN when rebaking!!! THAT IS THE KEY FOR MY BLACK PROBLEM!!! When i go full screen the black goes away the first time almost every time. Ocassionally, i have to relog if it doesn't work. But, it's better than having black on my av!!! I have been able to get rid of the black for 2 weeks now and i am SO excited about it! I hope this works for you. This will not permanently fix you, but will fix you everytime it shows up.

There are ALOT of us blackies out there. It's a linden problem that needs fixing. Please IM me and tell me if it helps you! I am desparately trying to get the word out to others and need feed back to see if it works for everyone.
