Hi everyone,

I have a GeForce MX 4000 video card, which is ok on Second Life but of course no Windlight and very slow in a sim with many textures. My friend has given me his Radeon 9550 since he has upgraded to a new card. Will this actually be an improvement?

Many thanks.

since you bumped it I'll chime in with as much as I know. I used a Radeon 9250 for quite a long time when I first came to SL. It worked fine........a little slow on frame rate but not too bad. I would think a 9550 would do better.....though there had been quite a few updates since I replaced that video card that require more from your GPU. So, I would say give it a try. Make sure you have the latest drivers and uninstall all other drivers you may have before putting the card in your computer.

And one piece of advice I have..........if you can swing a more recent nVidia card than the one you have now go for it. NVidia handles OpenGL much better than ATI.

Some of this is going to depend on the amount of video memory on each of the cards. Most of the MX4400s I see around have only 64MB of RAM. The 9250s usually have 128MB.

You may want to take a look at the following site. In many ways these two cards are very similar.
