In the latest version of SL, I find frequently that I will sign in to SL and have no sound at all - neither streaming nor any other sounds (the fastest way to tell is to right click on myself - if the menu does not make a noise, I know the sound is gone). Closing SL, reopening it normally corrects this, but sometimes I have to do it more than once, and I don't know if it will work until I am logged all the way in. Any reason why this may be happening? I have an HP Pavillion ZD7000 series laptop with a Conexant soundcard. When SL has no sound, sound in other applications is fine.

I suppose I could chime in here and say I have exactly the same problem, but I don't. I know exactly why sound doesn't always work for me in SL.

I suppose I could chime in here and say that both HP's and Dell's suck the big one, but it wouldn't be hugely constructive.

i was talking to another mac user last night with the same problem, se fixed it by creating another user account on her computer. and when signing onto SL from the new account she has sounds. (thats new user account on the computer not SL)

It's not a problem limited to the OEMs... I've seen this behaviour, as well, and my computer rivals Frankenstein's Monster for sheer composition-from-unrelated-parts-ness.

I'd be curious to know what sound device / driver you folks are using. I have had this happen, but I think it only happened when I was concurrently running something that bypassed MS DirectSound in Windows. I even have an app (68K emu) that, when run, will silence newview.exe.

I'm using the ALSA driver for the C-Media CMI8738 chipset. As long as I remember to wait 20 seconds after switching virtual desktops to let aRts release /dev/dsp, sound works fine, apart from streaming music.

Currently have a C-Media AC97 integrated with my motherboard. Drivers are all up to date, and sound worked up until two days ago, after a client crash. Now, I have no sound at all, within the client.
I've tried rebooting, reinstalling, reinstalling and then rebooting, and none of it helps. I am also not running any other applications, at all, nevermind apps that would be attempting to access the soundcard. Any other suggestions? _____________________

Definetly not helpfull, but I had this the other day when I accidentally dislodged my soundcard.
- on a more serious note however, anyone tried updating chipset drivers? (may be a solved problem.)_____________________

This happened to me this morning for the first time ever in SL (over a year's time). I have been using the same crummy Dell Precision 410. dxdiag says I'm using Crystal WDM Audio device with Microsoft's driver. This needs to be bugged.

my experience seems to indicate that this happens when you take focus away from sl while it's loging you in
. which since it now takes so long to log in, most people are switching to somehting else while they wait. so it's not precisely a problem with the new version, but it's become more apparent because of the login delays. I'm not entirely sure the lack of focus durring login is what does it. but it's what it seems like to me._____________________

I've had the same problem as of lately.
All I have to do to get the sound back is to briefly exit my land, come back in and the sound kicks in. - T - _____________________

Ok, here's my scary observation for the day... If I run winamp while running SL, turning up the volume on winamp causes the music in SL to become audible. So, I can go from having no music to listening to something that sounds like neighbours involved in a music war, but I can't seem to get any sound out of SL without winamp running. Creepy, but true.

Sound Volume...
01-05-2005 23:33
Note that newer versions of Winamp and various other Media Players for Windows will SLAVE their Volume control to the Windows System Audio Properties "Master" and/or "Wave Out" volume sliders...
So running one of these programs can seriously alter your computer's volume settings - even AFTER the program is closed. Just FYI. Take care, --Noel "HB" Wade (Tread Whiplash) |

Thanks for the note, but I have no audio even if SL is the first thing I run on boot. ... I'll figure it out eventually (I hope...) and in the meantime I'll just drop in the occasional note on my findings.
