The first problem is that when I go to change the appearence the pictures and the body keep flashing! So I end up with rocks on my face, grass on my legs and bricks for a body!
Also when I try to sort that all my text ends up as little lines so I can't read anything! I'm not quite sure what to do.

Might be a Video Card / Driver Problem.
Are other Games working 100% ?
Did you install the latest Drivers for your Video Card ?
I remember one of my old Cards being broken,
Text was unreadable after some time (not in 3D mode).
i had to replace it (ok, it was a S3 virge, stone age by todays Standards)

All my other games seem to be fine!
I'm not even sure what graphics driver I've got. It's whatever was in my laptop when I bought it! Will try and have a look though, thanks.

Laptop ? this might be the Problem, only the finest Laptops have Graphics Hardware (GPU)
that works for Games - it would help to know the exact Name of the Graphics Chip.
Always worth trying : get the latest Driver and Install it. (ok, you know that already)

Sad but true, only good ATI and NVIDIA cards are supported by SL. From: someone
