Recently upgraded a vidcard to a GeForce 6800, and while messing with different in-game settings and coming across AGP, I gave it a test run.
WITH AGP on, at home Im fine, getting a smooth average 55fps, both sim/user pings are low, two digit numbers. TP to a club, or higher populated area, and my fps drops to 0.8-2. sim and user ping are well past 7k. I cannot TP out, I cant move, or talk obviously. Last night I sat for 15 mins to see if this passed, it never did. Quit SL, and relog back in at home, all's fine.
Without AGP on, I tp to same places, and in mere seconds Im fully rezzed in, as well as my surroundings, with a pleasing 30-50fps.

Same issue for me

I hadn't even thought about. I get decent FPS rates and some serious lag from time to time in heavily populated zones. I always just assumed it was the characteristics of the game or the Net; but after reading your post I went and checked out my settings. I run a GeForce 7800 GS 256MB (AGP). I clicked off AGP and boom my FPS went up by 15 to 20 and heavier populated zone do not lag as much as they used to. You're right in that it is very odd that it works this way.
Thanks for the Tip =)

I've yet to run SL in PCI mode but then again I'm using 2 7800GTXs in SLI so with me it might be moot.
I'd conjecture that "AGP mode" may be requesting different information from the servers (larger). Im sure its also more CPU intensive, which priobably has more to do with it than anything.

AGP is "accelerated graphics port", it's to do with the way SL communicates with your video card. AGP can make things much faster for some people. As you found out though, there's a reason it's optional ....
