I still cannot get in - SL dies a horrible non-responding death, and has taken my entire computer down with it twice. I love the stability of SL these days.

Did you get in right after hitting the submit button on this thread? I am not a technical guru by any means, but I think it has to do with hyperthreading technology and router thingies.

Try resetting your login location to your home (click the Preferences button then on the first Preferences tab change the location to home, not last location), and then log in.

This thread's covering a LOT of ground, but I'll try what I can.

If SL crashes at "Precaching", that means it's crashing while trying to render the graphics. If you're a new user, this generally means your graphics card is not compatible. If you're an existing user and you've done a system restore lately, you'll probably need to reinstall your graphics drivers.

In the current version of Second Life (1.5.14), many login issues that give the error "despite our best efforts..." can be resolved by deleting Second Life's temporary cache files. This is especially true after a bad Second Life crash.
