Hi,
I have a problem to start the game and didn't find any clue to resolve it on the supports pages.
I start the game, then I have the box with "Checking Hardware", after that i have an error message : "Second Life is unable to access a file that it needs. ...". I tried to restart my computer, uninstall/install the game, nothing works.
Can you please help me ?

"Second Life is unable to access a file that it needs" Usually cause of special characters used in login , SL dont like it and cant find the files it need (â ê `c ) Only way to make SL work as it is right now , make a new user with normal characters, install SL , then try again.
C:\Documents and Settings\"<here>"\Application Data\SecondLife

Hey also are you running a security system wtih your puter, like norton anitvirus or some other virus protector?? If so deactivate it while you uninstall and reinstall and also before you reinstall click start and run regedit and delete all files related to SL. Then reinstall SL with your protection off, and then try to connect to SL. Also try to run SL with your proctecion off and see if that helps, that worked for me when i was having the same problem. You have to configure your protection to let sl run, it slows your connection alot if you don't.

with previous versions of Second Life, i had this problem too, but it was automatically quitting SL without saying an error message.
with the newest versions, it says that exact problem.
someone from the tech support told me it's because my user account in WinXP have accents (à, è, é, ô, etc...).
i wish they would fix that problem soon enough, so i will come on a lot more, cos i think it's a "pain" to reboot the comp (to be sure the comp will run smooth) and log in your "Second Life user account" only for this.
when i bought my computer, they (the ones who built my comp and installed WinXP) named my user account "Propriétaire", even after renaming it, it still keep the name, somewhat hidden from the user eyes...)
so for now i have a 2nd user account on WinXP mostly only for Second Life

This "special character in username path prevents SL from starting" is deadly--I've seen many, many occurrences of it. Just wanted to add that pending rigorous testing to make sure this bug has been squashed flatter than a classic video game sprite, it should be fully resolved shortly and included in a future set of release notes. And then we can all rejoice--in different languages--and stomp it even flatter.

From: Khashai Steinbeck C:\Documents and Settings\ (Find user folder, rename) If it were only that simple. The registry and various file .ini settings rely on that name and would break a lot of things. LL just needs to fix the damn bug already!
