griefing potential

Let's say I make a portable highly dangerous area, like the bottom of Yegor's suicide pit, or a space with a lot of llSetDamage particles rez'ing and whizing around.

Further posit that the area has an on/off switch.

Say that I (because I am a griefer) trick a newbie in to doing a "set home to here" over my dangerous machine, then turn it on.

It seems to me that they will die, teleport home, die, teleport home, die, etc.

Has this been addressed? Possibly by a short period of invunerability when you teleport home?

I would bet at some point this sort of thing WILL happen , perhaps not as of now because we are still a reletivly small population but in time we will see ALL kinds of people, scams and other negitive things happening here , will we be prepaired as a game or will some be prepaired only due to there long gameing history and others being babes in the woods so to speak be exposed to horific encounters by the big bad wolf ?

interesting topic to say the least

That's a good one, and and interesting discussion.

For the record, there is an infinite list of methods of grief-play right now. We have been merely asking people to "not-do-that" to avoid rampant greif play.

We are working on a number of tools that everyone will be able to use to limit grief play, and hopefully keep it to "dangerous" areas like the outlands.

See, here's the perfect opportunity for me to remind y'all of one of my old feature requests.

In the Options, give us more choices for where to start.

* Home
* Last location
and then a few more to be determined, but such as:
* the Boardwalk
* the Bazzar
* someplace Official where you can find either a Linden or a Complaints Box (with InventoryDrop allowed) -- NOT the welcome area(s), tho!

This way, if someone gets stuck in a bad loop such as Wednesday described, they could ctrl-Q, restart SL, change start location in options, then connect.

#!

I just realized that what I suggested is exactly what happens when you die in old-skool arcade games. And therefore further suggest that your avatar should blink or flash during this time

Get with the times, the avatar shouldn't blink or flash but be partially see through. :D

Hm then again, maybe a blinking, flashing, transparent ghost would be cool.

On a more serious note I think dying on your home spot, or within 1 meter of it or something, should respawn you at a (random) place about 25 - 100 meters away. I like the invulnerability idea too though.

In the meantime one could log out, start the client again, and BEFORE logging in set to last location, pull up the map, TP out, set new home.

Or.... well hell, maybe not since last location would be that spot.

Hm.... I suppose then perhaps the best immediate recourse would be to call LL support and ask if they could do anything for you.

Hurrah for worst-case-scenario thinkers. lol

OK, I almost don't know why I'm responding to a necropost, but I want to point out there is a way to avoid this problem nowadays:
  1. Start Second Life
  2. Click on the "Preferences..." button
  3. Click on the "General" tab
  4. Look under "Start Location"
  5. There is a new option, "Show Start Location on Login Screen". Check the box to select it.
  6. Click the "OK" button to save the changes.

You now have a "Start Location" pop-up/drop down menu in the lower left. Choose "<Type region name>" and you can enter any region. There is a way to specify coordinates, too, but I'm not sure of the exact syntax. (Maybe: "Region/X/Y/Z"?)
