memory usage goes higher over time

hi,

the longer i play sl, the higher my memory usage goes. that usage doesn´t depend on my actions. i can stand in an empty sim, doing nothing, and still the usage goes up slowly.
it starts at about 500 mb and after about 45 minutes it´s over 1 gig (i have 1 gig ram) and my computer starts to swap (sl gets unplayable) and i have to restart sl.

this problem started with the "performance update". i think it was 1.14, not sure though about the version number.

also sometimes when the swapfile gets that big, my hdd is working for about 2-5 minutes after i shut down sl (i can kill the service in the taskmanager to speed that up)

i use win xp
ati radeon x1600 256 mb
amd athlon @ 2gig
1 gig ram

anyone else having that problem?
is there a solution?

thanks for reading :)

I have the same problem than you but it's even worse because of my config beeing less powerfull than yours (half memory, older graphic card at least), even though it complies with the recommended specs. I do not have another solution than yours and I would like to know too if it's a normal behaviour, if the fault is with Win XP or if it's a memory leak in the viewer.

It's called a "memory leak" and is a classic problem of buggy badly designed/written apps. Not that im actually *saying* SL is badly written.

It's been there since I joined SL 6 months ago. I imagine it will be there a year from now.

Memory leaks are hard to find in badly designed code bases, slightly less so in better designed ones. Sadly I think we have the former with the SL client.

I have 2GB ram now as of recent due to the horribly written code in SL. I had a gig and it'd start out at about 600mb ram and as said in the thread would climb to over 1gb. My hard drive to ram swapping was horrible and so was the lag. So, I finally decided to upgrade my memory.

Following the upgrade, the highest amount of memory SL has taken up is 1.6gb. A new record for me!

GOOOOOOOO LL!

Memory leaks are inevitable, and if open sourcing the client demonstrated anything, it was that the code was surprisingly tidy and well commented. Given the fast evolution of the SL client, the only surprise is that memory leaks aren't a much bigger problem.
