I've got a nice, brand new computer, to replace my old one that suffered the final crash some time ago and now after it had been delayed for over a month it's here and it dose nothing but freeze then crash less than 30 seconds after launching SL.
The spec requirements say a Redeon 8500 or better is required and I've got that I got the most recent Drivers, windows is up to date and as it still freezes up on me. There are no marking on the computer and the manual doesn't say whats inside so I can't check anything else about it apprart from the opperating system windoes XP and the hard drive space of 80 GB.
I know its the ATI graphice card though, It keeps giveing me error messages, and every time I try to launch that ATI controll center the driver update stuck on my desc top that tells me it has experianced and error and closes before it has even opened.
less than 30 minutes after I first turned the computer on the ATI drivers experianced an error. It told me to restart my computer to fix it after the display changed to 600/800 and a total number of display colours of 8 and that I would be prompted to send an error report when the computer next started up, which I wasn't.
It's a lovely introduction to a new computer. Damb thing didn't even come with word.
So, can I get the graphics card to work with SL and is there a way I can find out what else is in there without getting out a scruedriver?

Goto Drivercleaner.net and download DriverCleaner Pro 1.4. Follow the instructions in the readme file to clean out all your old drivers for each videocard you have in that thing (like if you have onboard Intel remove those) and clean out your current driver. Download either the Omega ATI driver (omegadriver.net) or the NGO Optimized ATI driver (NGOHq.com). Give that a shot and tell us if there is any change.

I wasn't able to find the Omega ATI driver but I got the DriverCleaner Pro and NGO Optimized ATI driver. It didn't fix the problem but it has changed it. Now when I load up SL the game will run fine for a short time, no more than 5 minutes, then it freezes just as it did before, but it doesn't crash or stay frozen. Instead after a short time the screen will flash blaxk and come back on, and SL will be working fine again, it will continue like this for about a minut then freze and repeat the prosess. It just freezes, flashes the monutor on and off then continues on. I tryed repeating the uninstall, clean up and reinstall prosess and tryed again, when I tested it again I think my card crashed. The computer kept running but the signal to the monitor was lost completly after installing the new drivers though it still told me that my drivers were out of date as it loaded up, asking me to upgrade to catalyst 3.5. Maybe I did something wrong. Been waiting for ages to get back onto SL and now a bad graphics card is keeping me off

I think you got a defective video card. It happens sometimes in shipping on a new system. Contact the manufacturer and have them replace it.

From: ColdFire Bigwig I think you got a defective video card. It happens sometimes in shipping on a new system. Contact the manufacturer and have them replace it. Its either a defective card or its not getting enough juice, most likely its defective. All graphics cards come with some kind of warentee either from the manufacturer, the outlet you bought it from, or both. Edit: my bad, its Omegadrivers.net. I forgot the s at the end of driver for the address. Even then NGOHq is also a mirror for Omegadrivers.net in their download section.

*Wonders about pulling the Gforce 2 card out of the old PC and using it temporarily*
Is there any way to check to be sure what the problem is? Any diegnosis softwere that will check out to see if my card is not working right or underpowered?

Try this: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.htmlAnd if that doesn't help you identify what hardware you're running theres PC Wizard: http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php

That sounds as a defective card, my last radeon was behaving pretty similar , windows behaved very very strange if i installed ati drivers, without it didnt (but then i couldnt do jack -.-), instant it started using hardware , weee buggyness. Id definatly test it with another vid card, no crashing then send in the other get a new one.
