When we revisit an area, it seems as if the area has to load and rez all over again. I hope thats not true. Does the area reload from cache, or all over again? It appears as if textures may load from cache, but geometry appears to reload all over again. Do textures and geometry check for a "last changed" date, and only load again if the asset hasnt changed?

The Lindenworld is a big place and your computer cannot store all of it in RAM, so much of it goes to disk cache. BUT-- it is such a big place that the disk cache is not enough either, so eventually stuff drops out of it and has to reload when you revisit. Even if it's your home.

Sadly I do not know if the textures are more likely to save on cache than the objects, but one would think the textures would take up less space and be more suitable for cache retention.

I just ordered another 512MB RAM and will see how much disk cache decreases in a few days.

Whatever they use, it tends to suck usually. I have it set up to clear the cashe everytime I log in and it seems to keep SL running better overall but it does make signing in a lot more blank and empty until it loads.

(A) It's early Monday,
(B) I really am a blonde, and
(C) I don't know much about hypergeek stuff like zbuffers and polygon rendering, but

I think this is an issue to which LL has paid a fair amount of attention in the coming upgrade. As I understand from other postings here, an "interest list" algorithm has been introduced to try to smarten up the whole initial rezzing process.
