Hello. I'm brand new to SL. I mean, I made my account maybe a half hour ago. Brand new.

I downlaoded andinstalled the client, opened it up, entered in all my info, and it took me to the loading screen. So I'm chillin for maybe 5 minutes while I wait for it, and then I get an error. "Windows has detected and recovered from a device failure" and then it tells me to restart. It looks like Safe Mode, ie: 640x480 res, 8 bit color, all that stuff. I can't change my settings back to normal, soo I restart. I tried again, same thing. Then, I turn all the graphics settings all the way down. ALLLLL the way down, and again, it crashes.

I have a feeling it's got to do with my graphics card, which is an ATI RADEON IGP 345M. Yes. All caps. I have no idea why.

I have no idea the specs of the card, or any of that, but I know I have enough ram and such to run SL.

Here's a screenshot of the error: http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/5017/damnit9nj.jpg

Wow, I just noticed it said "Please save your work -anc- reboot" anc?

Please help ;_;

Much love <3

This happened to me when I tried to play City of Heroes, which was not compatible with my graphics card. However, I can play SL with no problem. I hope your video card works with SL. Sorry I can't be of much help.

I'm afraid you are using what could be described as a bottom feeding video solution that likely won't run SL. You can try updating the video drivers with the latest Omega drivers. (since it is a laptop, the manufactures drivers are likely to be years out of date and the Omega drivers tend to work really well with laptops.

http://www.omegadrivers.net/

Only other thing I can suggest is making sure all your other drivers are up to date as well.

Thank you so much, it works without crashing now ^^

But I'm going to assume that it's not supposed to look like this:

Does this have anything to do with my network, or whatever?

Nope, it isn't suppoed to look like that at all. How much system ram do you have? If you have 256 keep in mind 64m is tied up in shared memory so you may not have enough. It may also be that the shared video memory is just too slow for SL to use (may explain the total lack of textures pictured). It would really be helpful if you could post your system's specifications.

Oh, I should've done that in the first post. Sorry ^_^

440mb ram, 2.4 ghz, and I don't know if you really need to know anything else. Keep in mind, it is a laptop so, that could be why.

I may be wrong...

But I hear ATI and SL are a bit wonky together.

I have ATI, but I run just fine.

Got my setings all the way up too...

I'm really pushing the envelope on my system, with surprisingly little lag.

Still got jaggies out the butt... but I still got my textures looking nice and crisp.

But yeah. I ramble.

ATI might be your problem.

Also, I'm running a lap top. ^.^ So, yeah.

Ok, some questions for you. Are you on a wireless connection and what speed are you running? You can do a speed test here.

http://performance.toast.net/

did you update your motherboard drivers when you did the video drivers? What is the make and model of your laptop? Are you behind a router or firewall?

Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools> System Information and copy/paste that info into your post

Wouldn't hurt to run this to identify any major problems.

http://www.pcpitstop.com/default.asp

Do a full PC tune up and you can test anonomusly.

That is true in some cases, the older generation ATI cards like the 8500 up to the 9800 did not get along with SL in some cases, others had no problems at all. The newer PCI-e cards like the X700 and X800 don't seem to have near the problems.

Either one of the lucky few or you have a newr laptop

That is one of my biggest complaints with using an ATI card in SL. I paid a lot of money for a ATI 9800pro only to find out I have to turn off the AA and AF filtering to keep from crashing repeatedly. This turns a $250 card into a $70 card.

The video card is likely the proble in of itself, not just ATI. The video is somewhere between the 7000 and the 8500 performance wise. It may work, it may not I don't know. I do know the video setup isn't really gonna play games too well once you get past solitare and minesweeper.

The 345M IGP is actually a 7000-series chipset, and as such, doesn't meet our Minimum System Requirements.

Well, there you go.

And, sidebar, I'm running on wireless.

So. I guess this thread is dead now ^.^

Well, just to awnser a few questions to not look like an ignorant buttfucker;

I'm on wireless, but good wireless.

Like, 56mbps good, and i'm right next to the router.

I updated the drivers with the omega drivers (Which stopped my laptop from crashing) right before I came to SL

La la la. :\ Damnit.

Don't feel bad and I doubt anyone thinks bad of you. ATI purposly makes it difficult to nail down the exact capabilities laptop graphics have because they want to sell them. Until Lee mentioned it, I wasn't for sure what it might be equivelent to because they don't want you to know how low on the totem pole it really is. I tried for an hour to find out on Google and all I could come up with was it was pretty low but not if it would run SL or not.

The nVidia RIVA TNT2 is very old graphics hardware. It was first released in early 1999. It's two or three generations behind a nVidia GeForce2, which is listed in our Minimum System Requirements.

TNT2 cards will not work with Second Life.
