since the video ram is shared with the system ram i would bump ram upto atleast 2gb, other than that it seems like it would do the job

maybe someone with experiences using that particular ATI video card could chime in to shed some lite on performance

i am not sure why you say the video ram is shared. i think the ATI 1600 has it's own 256MB of memory.

I have used this video card with good success.

I am guessing that this laptop costs something like $1200?

when i see something like

Max Allocated RAM Size 256 MB

that tips me off to shared memory, cause if it wasnt it would just say

video card with x amount of ram

I agree that something doesn't sound right here.

"discrete video memory" does seem to indicate that the video circuitry has its own 256MB RAM.

But if that's so there would be no need for the "Max Allocated RAM" statement. I'd check that closely before making any purchase.

Who's the vendor?

found it, it is a shared technology

the deal is the video card accesses the system memory at nearly the same speed as a dedicated bank, so you can have a shared memory card (like almost all laptops) and not suffer a huge performance hit like in the past ...

http://www.geek.com/ati-introduces-discrete-graphics-cards-using-system-memory/

so yea get an extra gig of ram, so you actually have video memory & windows memory & secondlife memory + room to spare for browsing, paint or whatever

and it should do pretty darn good
