Map won't load.. Friends list won't load (waiting)... Can't move... I seem to be stuck underwater in a grey void... Nothing else loads... Get a "can't load gesture" message too..
What's going on?! Running SL on a laptop that has no problems with STALKER, EVE Online and so on.. what am I missing???

Were you run over by a bus recently? If so did you follow the appropriate white light at the end of the tunnel? If none of this applies, what kind of graphics card is in your laptop? I find I have to use aftermarket drivers with my Nvidia card to fool it into thinking its not a laptop. But this isnt to play the game, just to get my ripple water and local lighting to function right. Your problem sounds much heavier. Sounds like your not getting enough data streaming in. I have issues kinda like that when I get knocked offline. Lets hear from the techno-geeks on this one.

I managed to log in and could see myself.. well, some of myself, and then couldn't move.
Logged out, logged in, back to square one. Did a reinstall as well.
On a laptop with a mobility 1600, don't think it's the vid card. Perhaps the comcast netgear wireless router (tho I am using ethernet to connect to it) is blocking stuff.. Or something.

wireless definately a negative
05-01-2007 17:00
Tho I dont know if your wireless setup has anything to do with your ongoing problems, wireless setups DO have their own negative attributes. I was getting funky packet loss issues using wireless. For example, typing a sentance, having the sentance not show up on screen, typing another sentance that does show up and then twenty seconds later having the first sentance show up. All this out of sequence chat was making people think I was some whackjob. Went to a hardline after that and the problem was solved. If you check out the 'minimum specs required' page for SL, you will see they do not recommend wireless setups. Heres a question, have you ever been able to run this game?

I can't remember if I've ever run SL on this laptop. And I'm wired anyway right now.
Got a fast fast cable connection, other online games and apps work, so why SL doesn't.. I have no idea...

Are you using a router to share your internet connection? It could be stopping the UDP packets which could explain that you can login, but not load anything. If you a router, try to connect your laptop directly to the internet-modem/connection!

Turned off Zone Alarm, no result. Could be something going on at the router end I guess.

You dont are the only one with this issues my friend. I´m in 21th day without Second Life. Where you from? I´m from Brazil and have the some problems using a desktop. SL have some network problems. Look in debug mode control+shift+1 and see the bandwidth. Here start +900, then drop down to ZERO. I have a DSL conection (2 MB) and disable firewall and antivirus.

From: Pirate Cotton Annapolis - USA. On a netgear Cable/wireless modem router. Wireless? SL dont recomend wireless conection. I try 6 mounths ago use a wireless conection with my laptop Toshiba and SL dont run properly. After I read in knowledge base or forum about this SL recomendation. Try test with a direct cable conection.

As stated.. somewhere.. I'm directly plugged in to the router etc via an ethernet cable.
...oh, the debug screen shows no ping, no traffic, nothing to the server. Traceroutes work fine to it tho.

Pirate-- To verify your internet connection is fine, use DSLReports.com to test your bandwidth.
What version of OpenGL does the ATI Mobility 1600 support? I believe it needs to support OpenGL v2.0 (but not sure, maybe only support for OpenGL 1.2 is needed, someone more in the know can verify).
As someone else mentioned, you may want to try the Omega drivers, instead of the ATI drivers.
----------------- Edit: Also try what Mark suggested. Plug your laptop directly into the modem (bypassing the NetGear Wireless Router).
1) Have your laptop firewall and anti-virus running. 2) Connect directly to the modem. 3) If it still doesn't work, disable your laptop firewall and anti-virus, then test again 4) Regardless of the result, reactivate your laptop firewall and anti-virus
Depending on the results above, you may have identified the problem to be one of the following: - Your NetGear Wireless Router - Your laptop firewall and/or anti-virus
If it's your NetGear Wireless Router, is this a firewall as well as a router? If so, try checking the router logs for dropped packets. If it's not setup to log, activate logging and try your connection again to generate the logs.
If it's either your laptop firewall or antivirus, check the logs for those. Turn on logging if it's not activated and retry your connection to generate logs.
----------------- Edit2: Also try setting your SL client preferences to the bare minimums. Since this may be the first time using your laptop to run SL, it could be that the default settings are taxing your laptop.

From: Trevor Langdon Pirate-- To verify your internet connection is fine, use DSLReports.com to test your bandwidth.
My speed rawks, on 8mbs cable. The test confirmed it all From: someone What version of OpenGL does the ATI Mobility 1600 support? I believe it needs to support OpenGL v2.0 (but not sure, maybe only support for OpenGL 1.2 is needed, someone more in the know can verify).
It says in my catalyst control center that it's using OpenGL version 6.14.10.5757 From: someone As someone else mentioned, you may want to try the Omega drivers, instead of the ATI drivers.
Games work fine with the ATI ones - and this one might go a bit foo foo since this is a laptop vid card. Is SL incapable of working with a standard range of vid cards? From: someone Also try what Mark suggested. Plug your laptop directly into the modem (bypassing the NetGear Wireless Router).
As said above a few times, it is, they are in fact, the same device. From: someone 3) If it still doesn't work, disable your laptop firewall and anti-virus, then test again
No effect, also turned down details too. I'm NAT'd, wondering if that's causing issues.
