I may have found a solution to the random freezing and/or crashing problem that a number of people of have reported. It seems that 1.6 has broken the "enable shadow" function in the graphics and display settings under "preferences."

Turning shadows off stopped the freezing and crashing problem in both systems I have at home.

Under Preferences -> Graphics -> Performance Options. Uncheck Shadows, if they're checked.

I turned them off before I logged in, myself. Seems like it would be less strain on the program that way. Maybe I'm just the superstitious sort.

Of course, I can't log in now anyway, so I wouldn't try logging out to do it quite yet.

Thanks for the tip.... I will try it if either of my accounts is ever able to get back into SL.

Also there appears to be a corruption in the cache file. If it gets large enough (1gb).

Just remove the current cache and tone down the cache size to 500mb or less.
