Not too sure what to do with this one. I have two default boxes & can't link them together if they are 4.378m or meters apart. The pic below shows both boxes same coord except for the x-axis one is at 190.000 and the other is 194.378m. It will faill if I link but any bit closer it will link. Tried restarting computer & SL, alternate char on same computer, gf account on different computer but same DSL , and several different sims. No luck.

A Linden told me that was strange and told to file a bug report. Wondering if anyone encountered this same problem?

Weird, Toneless... can you reproduce the bug with more boxes? Does this happen just in a specific area or across many parts of the gridverse? This sounds wacky -- never happened to me but I'm eager to help you reproduce it if you can give me more details. Cheers. :)

Anywhere and everywhere. Tried several places and many default boxes, spheres, anything.

But a another weird update. if the boxes are 2 x 2 x 2m they can be linked up to 13.346m apart. So much for building today.

Weird. Wacky... I wonder if it is one of those bugs that only affects a certain percentage of the Residency (UpdateGeom lag and missing profile due to text overflow being two others I can think of). I haven't heard any other complaints today but... let's see what else comes streaming in.

HOLY MOLY OXENUNFREE!!!

IT AFFECTS ME TOO! Uh oh. :(

Alright. We're in this together!

Heh, the Crappy Link Distance Formula (TM) strikes again.
I betcha its about a dozen lines long by now, riddled with crap to make it seem like we have some kind of legroom in terms of link distances. It also consistantly gives you lip when you try to link very thin objects with not-so-thin objects. It really blows when you cant link something exactly the way you want, and have to poke at the order of the prims just to squeeze by.

The boxes are too small. Make the boxes bigger.

I've been occasionally seeing similar probs. Prefabs that were linked just fine the last time I pulled them out, and fall apart now. I've seen a large group become unlinked, and also just one prim from the group. The sad part is, that for whatever reason, it wont even allow me to link it back the way it was (too far apart NOW). I am absolutely sure they were linked before, I've had them out before. And I'm sure the creator of the fab would agree.

Something I've learned in SL. Everything is a virtual ghost *chuckles*. We cant back up anything here, cant rely upon the system for anything, dont get email replys from the company, even when severl thousands of $L were lost due to the system. It does not seem to matter if we pay $75 USD a month (as I do) or $200. Sometimes I wonder if it is time for a 3rd life...

So toss in your monthly USD, play the "game" and please tell them where you see problems, but dont expect an email reply, even if things do get fixed. And I must say, I have seen some of my recommendations & bug reports get fixed.

Ok definately they made changes to the Link Distance Forumula.... I made a fairly elaborate platform when I build in a sandbox a couple months ago, 51 prims. If I unlink them I can't link them together.

This behavior (default box prims can link to about 4.378 meters) is the way things have worked for awhile now. The bigger things are, the further they can link. However, I'd definitely agree that the link formula is screwed. I can't understand why the order of linking matters, or why I can unlink the root prim in my game board and be unable to relink it back on as root. I can link it back on as something other than root, but not root. This is incredibly vexing considering the order of prims matters greatly because I'm trying to send link messages all over the place!

I have also found that it's damn near impossible to actually link 256 prims together into an object, even though we're supposed to be able to do this. The only time I managed it, I selected all 256 closely-packed default spheres, linked them (which resulted in 2 link sets for some reason! Try it!), and then clinked link _again_ to actually get them into one object. No clue what's going on there, but I spent hours on this last night and I'm really worried that a stupid inability to link is going to totaly screw my big project :/

Today, I discovered that objects I can't link because they are too far apart can be linked if I hit Ctrl-L several times rapidly. They can be moved around, textured, etc., but if I go out of edit and back again, they're unlinked and cannot be linked again, no matter what.

well there is a workaround i believe, i used to build a prim manipulator script, you where able to move and rotate a pri, in a link set (this way i managed to make a 150 meter gap between 2 linked prims)

Are you sure they were linked? Sounds like they were still just selected. I find that if I try to link again before the "too far apart" popup has cleared, my link command is simply ignored. That's led me to believe linking was successful before :/
