I am a new user...I downloaded the program, and it starts like a dream, and I can get to the point where it asks me to pick my sex. After that, the game freezes hardcore, I can't see my own avatar, and every object in the place is in a perpetual state of loading. I can see other people's avatars, but they don't move, which leads me to believe that the game froze(duh).
I meet the system requirements, but, you know, minimally. p4 1.7 Ghz NVidia GeForce 2 - 32 MB 256 MB of RAM Windows XP
you know, the usual.
It looks like a cool game and all, I wanna go in there and do my thang, but I don't know if it's my fault or the game's.

I have this problem too, every time I try to use the apearance editor. But I aslo have a 4MB graphics chip.
Anything to do with editing your appearance will always create a lot of lag, but that lag is multiplied several times for me.

While I could sugget you get a better computer, my first suggestion would be to get more RAM. SL is memory hungry, increase your RAM to 1Gb or better and see if that makes a difference.
Your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited by law. Do not attempt this at home.

Your CPU and graphics card should be alright (not great, just alright) but 256MB is really not enough. I would suggest upgrading to at least 512 if you are going to keep this computer for a while. When it's time to build or buy a new one, get AT LEAST 1 gig of RAM so you'll be ahead of the curve for a few years. If I was building a new system right now I'd probably get 1.5 or 2 gigs of RAM, just to be on the safe side, and because memory is cheap.
For a new computer I also suggest getting a video card with 128 or 256 megs of RAM, preferably to 256. Again, keeping ahead of the curve for a few years...

Well yeah...

But do you think that's actually the problem? It IS the bare minimum of RAM required, so the game shouldn't freeze altogther, it should just run slower...
I'll do some more research...

Getting more RAM should never be the offered solution to a freezing problem, unless they're below minimum specs.
That said, I haven't a clue. You guys are reporting your crashes with the crash logger, right?

From the beloved software vendor themselves: From: someone 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features) In my experience, that 128 is pretty optimistic (i.e. 128 to run Windows, oh you wanted to run something on Windows?). If you haven't, you should take a look at The Support Wiki or the general support page. Good luck.

In response to "try it with 1Gb of RAM".. I have 512MB and never have memory issues.
