Hiya smart techie type people.

I ordered more RAM for my computer which I am expecting to arrive today. Currently I have 512mb (2 - 256mb). I ordered two 512mb sticks. Here is my question:

I know that I have to use them in pairs so, can I keep the 2 - 256's that are in their now and use them with the additional 2 - 512's that are coming today? Meaning I would have 1.536GIG of RAM.

Thank you.

If you have 4 memory slots, then in most circumstances yes

Sadly, dreadfully dependent on the make/model and sometimes even serial number of your motherboard. I've had machines (e.g. Intel mobo) where AABB worked but BBAA didn't but should have.

So in principle, yes, in practice, expect to do some swapping. You may find http://www.memtest86.com/ helpful.

Yes I have 4 memory slots. And Malachi, I have no idea WTF that link is you sent me. :p After inserting the RAM and if when I right-click the My Computer icon in Windows and choose Properties it shows up then I am good to go?

Its a utility to stress test the ram, but if they show then usually a good sign, just if you start to get glitching or crashing you know what to look at first.

When you get new ram installed i recommend testing them using - http://www.memtest86.com , they may work fine in alot of things , but if they fail any of these tests, youll start getting corrupted files, random wierdness ectect, its very easy to get defect ram delivered, i only had it once so far tho, so its rare.

You dont really need to run all the tests, ram has pretty low (o.O edit : LONG) warranty nowadays, but arrive bad you should change them fast.

What happend when i had bad was everything worked, but the second i started copying things to other drives they "arrived" corrupted unreadable.

Hey Kids!

Well the RAM is in, I repeat the RAM is in! :p

Right-click the My Computer icon and choose Properties shows 1.5 GB of RAM. I am noticing that WOW, when I alt-tab to look at my brower while running second life there is no lag at all. I have SL, Firefox, and Yahoo Messenger running and my computer is quiet as a mouse.

As for SL, I am not sure if it is affecting performance yet. I did notice that my Texture Cache Size automatically adjusted itself to LARGE. I tried bumping my draw distance up to 512 and still my FPS shot down to like 1. But again my computer was quiet, there was no sound of it "working." I am not techie so I dont know what it is called when the green light turns yellow and it sounds like my computer is straining.

ANYWAY...I have everything ON except shadows, though I am still having some issues with Local Lighting seeming to "stutter" me a bit. So I guess everything is cool.

Thanks for all your help all. Even if the new RAM doesn't improve my in-world experience, everything else on my computer is zipping along! Woot! :D
