Anyone having the same problem? I start the viewer, it goes to the black screen then instantly crashes and shows the crash logger.

I'm having this problem too - in my preferences it's set to auto-login, so the client loads, logs in, and then as soon as it gets to the loading screen it just shuts itself down (without showing the crash logger in my case). I've uninstalled and reinstalled, I have the correct version of SL... so I can't work out what the problem is.

I solved my problem, and this may work for others, so I'm sharing my process here.
First I had to disable auto-login. I went to C:/Documents and Settings/username/Application Data/SecondLife/user_settings/settings.xml and edited the AutoLogin parameter to be false. When I next loaded Second Life, I was able to go to Preferences and clear my cache, which was apparently the fix required. On logging in, I was prompted to agree to a new set of Terms and Conditions which I hadn't seen before, and once this was done I logged in just fine.
