Hi, sorry to hear you are having such problems.
I would suggest that, assuming you are still on help island, next time you get stably logged in, find a mentor and they will try to help you to resolve these issues in-game. For now, here are some suggestions.

Turn off Avatar Vertex Program. You can find it in Preferences, on the Graphics Detail tab.
Also, re-check that you have the current drivers for your graphics card.

2: The program will a times, load me in an inaccessable location on the map. For example, today when I first logged in, I appeared underground and underwater at the edge of Help Island.
3: There's a severe problem with loading my character's clothes. There's a 50/50 chance that after the 10 minute wait for my appearance to load, it will crash and no longer respond, or it will return to problem one above, then later, after 10 more minutes, crash anyway.
Both of these sound related, to me, and both sound like networking issues.
What speed of broadband connection do you have? Also, what is the Bandwidth setting in Preferences set to? This should be
lower than your actual available broadband speed.

I've doublechecked all my settings in game and out of the game. I've check my graphics card performance and it read adequate for the game's standards. I've even increased virtual memory to better suit online functions. What's wrong?
OK, if you need virtual memory at all, then you don't have enough RAM. 512Mb is the absolute minimum for playing SL - performance will be BAD. 1024Mb (1Gb) is reasonable, 2Gb is noticably better.
You say that you checked your graphics card performance? What card do you have?
