Hey ya'll. I just recently got a new firewall/virus protection/popup blocker/anti spyware software package (Yes, i'm secure as Ft. Knox now right? haha)

Problem is, when I have the thing running and try to log into SL, I get some HORRIBLE lag going. IE: I click on a door and try to walk through it, 20 seconds later the door opens and i go flying around the room nowhere near the door. I've looked at my sim ping...perfect....user ping....10 times what it should be! So I log out of SL, turn off the firewall, log back in and everything is just fine.

The software package is one that is provided by my net service (Adelphia) and it is called Freedom Security.

Anyone know of a way to fix this other than just not running them both at the same time? I tend to do other things like web surfing when i'm in-world and I don't like not having this protection.

Well.... no offense, but that security suite looks like it's a problem (yes, I looked at it. The manufacturer seems to be called "zeroknowledge" to boot). If it's causing that much lag, as you say, it's probably not in your best interest to keep running it.

What I would personally do in your position is get rid of it and refer to this excellent post on protective software and refer to this site on blocking most ad software.

If you're more paranoid, I'd also advise reading up on the latest threats at your leisure and buying a "hardware firewall." But both are more commitments than they are quick fixes.

Good luck!

TY for the advice! Since my original post I quickly got fed up with this package that my ISP offers (like you pointed out, Zero Knowledge is an interesting name for something that is supposed to protect your computer)

On the recommendations of a friend, I went out and downloaded the free AVG package and the Sygate firewall. Even thought i've been using it for less than an hour i'm already more happy with it than I was with the other. :)

TY again for the help!

Also, read the Wikipedia entries on opening ports, as that might have some relevance to you.
