My client (PC) crashed while switching window sizes and now that I'm back with the original configuration my chat window is gone, and hitting the hsitory button does not make it re-appear. Without history, I get the short-duration few lines. With history theoretically but not actually turned on I get not even that. No window, no short-duration few lines. Nadda.
How do I bring back the chat window?

I'd try a reinstall of SL.
If that doesn't do it I'd try an uninstall and then a fresh install.
But first I'd quadruple check to see if the chat history isn't almost totally off the screen showing just a pixel or two.

It was, indeed, off-screen. I don't remember what I did, and didn't do it intentionally, but I got it to show by 30 or so pixels so I could drag it back.
