Getting stuck at "Verifying Protocol version"

am I the only person this is happening to? According to the status page, SL grid is online, but when looking at the map, only 5 people are logged in.

Same here. Looks like something is broke. Don't ever bother with the status page. I think the Lindens forgot that it existed at some point. Better to come here, and see what people are saying. If you are having problems, it's likely there are 30 others experiencing the same thing.

Ethereal says that SL tries to send UDP to 66.150.244.151 on port 12036 and gets a "Port Unreachable" ICMP.

If you have Norton installed, you're going to have to reconfigure it, completely disable it, or even uninstall it to get it to stop blocking Second Life after the update.

Norton Internet Security and Norton Firewall completely shut off SL access after any update. If you have Norton installed, that's why you're getting this message. Second Life can't talk to its server (because Norton's blocking it) and thinks the server is down.
