Buying a new video card. Cute.

Well I happen to have found an older chipset driver which works on my friend's machine for the last 20 minutes. Standard disclaimer: use at your own risk. In the worst case, be aware of your ability to reboot and hit F8 before the Windows logo screen so you can do VGA mode and/or Safe Mode. Or go to intel.com and search for your chipset in the 'search' box for the latest drivers. The below site also links to utilities to back up your current drivers. Uninstalling your current drivers in Safe Mode before applying this is theoretically preferable. There is no forseeable reason why you'd need to do any of that, though.

There's an driver there from 2002 and perhaps others. I have posted the one that worked for my friend's Windows 2000 and XP tentatively on my own site:
http://smuckola.org/etc/intel_82xxx_drivers_win2000xp.zipNow, disable Windows Update from automatically applying updates without your consent, and don't ever let it apply drivers again! Always update drivers from the manufacturer's site. Go to the Windows Update applet in your system tray (bottom of the screen) if you have one and configure it to automatically check, but to prompt you before applying. I recommend never applying anything but the critical ones, and definately not XP's Service Pack 2.
Here's the response from Intel tech support, which I haven't tried.
"Thank you for contacting Intel(R) Technical Support.
Most likely the icon that you are seeing is a graphic driver that was
downloaded through the Microsoft* automatic update. You may disable the icon and
continue using the driver. You may find the option to disable the icon in the
Intel(R) Extreme Graphics properties:
Start > Settings > Control Panels > Switch to Classic View > Display > Settings
> Advanced > Intel(R) Extreme Graphics > Show tray icon.
If you have more issues or any other inquiry on this issue, I suggest
contacting the manufacturer of your system since they are responsible for the
distribution of the mentioned driver. "
Propz to Vampira Caldera for intrepidly and faithfully, however desperately, applying this to her system. heheh
