Sound has broken for me in 1.5. It is fine when I first log in, but within about ten minutes, the sound begins to degrade. It gets static and stutters. I have to relog to correct the problem.
I used to occasionally have this issue with streaming music on land. I could just click the music off and back on to correct that. This problem relates to all system sounds. The "thunder" sound made when rezzing a new prim seems to bring on the problem sooner. All sounds, IM chimes, window open and close, etc, now develop this stutter. It is very annoying and I dont know what to do about it other than report it.
I sent a bug report but I wanted to post to see if others have this issue.

From reading the FMOD forums a few months ago, I believe what's going on here is that the rendering thread is taking up all the available CPU, and leaving the audio threads without briefly. For some reason, FMOD screws up when this happens. I'm not sure of a fix, but FMOD is open-source, so you could fix it yourself. Try turning up the "Drop Draw Distance if FPS <" option in Preferences > Options. Does that help at all?

Thanks Catherine, I will try that. I usually run draw at 224m, because I like to see as far as I can. 224m has worked for me without system sound problems up until 1.5 version.
I would rather be a bit laggy and see everything as best as possible than have the world look bland. I did notice that some new settings make things look a lot better with a lower draw, so I will try that.
The sound is really annoying right now and its really beginning to grate on me. It has gotten to where there will be a background "popping" sound when nothing is even going on with sound except wind.

The 'disable far clip' option makes it so you see further with a shorter view distance, so maybe you can get the same visual effect with a lower draw distance?
.... speaking of which you can try re-enabling far clip to see if that makes the difference.

Well, that isnt the problem. I even spent some time with all my graphics dumbed down as far as I could get it. Ugly world like that, I must say. Anyway, even on minimal settings, my sound degrades after about 20 minutes of being logged in.

Ahh, no, that isn't the solution. It's very likely it's the problem, being that... well, that's the problem.

I might have a hardware issue. I am having trouble with sound in Counter-Strike now too. Winamp sounds fine, but my games seems to not behaving properly. Going to look at some of my other games and see if those are behaving properly.

Its only SL and the CS ource Beta that are giving me sound issues. I ran the trouble shooters on my sound and all is working properly. I have the latest drivers for my Creative SB Live card. I had no real issues with SL sound before version 1.5. I saw in another thread that some others are having some of the same problems, so I guess I am stuck until it is addressed. Thanks for help so far guys.

Streaming Audio Problems
09-03-2004 07:00
Having same problems with audio streaming since upgrade fro v. 1.4. Running MacOS X 1.5.5. Have a monster dual G5 and the ATI Radeon 9600 card, with 3.7 Mbs bandwidth on cable modem. So, my hardware and bandwidth are NOT a problem. Besides, all features ran great prior to the v. 1.5 upgrade. Actually seemed to get worse with the 1.5.1 patch. Have sent bug report to Linden. Will continue to try User fix.... but really believe it is a programming problem on the SL side. Any real fixes would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well, this particular problem is caused by FMOD, so yeah, it'll show up on both the Windows and OSX builds.

fyi
when I go into preferences and mute my sound, then unmute it, the sound is good again.
'till it acts up again!
