Stupid Installer

One of the major problems with each patch is the Installer is stupid. (Yes, I mean it that way TOO but what I really mean is it's doing some things blindly without thinking)

I use the -port command line option in my SL desktop icon because my roommate and I both use the Second Life Virtual world through a NAT router and have to use port forwarding with the router (If you dont know what I'm talking about.... http://secondlife.com/tiki/tiki-index.php?page=TechMultiplePCs )

Every patch, the installer puts in a new desktop icon and wipes out the command line options, which ends up in me (and I suspect a lot of people) experiancing major problems with packet loss, dropped connections, etc. It usually takes me several days of major frustration to remember to check the shortcut.

The installer really should check for an existing shortcut, or at least assume that if it's patching a previous SL viewer install that one already exists

I had the same thing, only with the -multiple option. I do agree that the installer should check for an existing shortcut and/or give an option to create one. There is a simple workaround for it though: rename the shortcut. The installer will replace it only if the name matches. I renamed my shortcut to 'SL', and hasn't been replaced in the last few updates.

I think it's the default installer machanism? It'll replace any shortcuts with the new ones. At least that's what the 'installer creator' software usually did for me.

While I understand and second the fact, that the installer does a poor job in this regard, how about renaming your modified SL shortcut as a workaround? You just have to delete the newly created shortcut after the update and use your old one. This would save you the trouble of having to retype the command line options again.

LOL... I actually never thought of renaming the shortcut. I'll bet a lot of people dont either. Good suggestion.

Still seems like the installer could be a little smarter though.

I was wondering why this hadn't happened to me--and it turns out I had renamed my shortcut. Please send a bug report about this too if you're so inclined, see if we can feed any brain vegetables to the installer. :)
