I am pissed off right now, so please take everything I say with a grain of calmness...
I installed Quicktime for SL. Quicktime has now hijacked my browser's mp3 mime settings. I can not remove it. I have tried all options within IE and Quicktime. Best I can do is disable it, but IE still tries to use it. (Yes, I am running windoze xp-pro)
Any advice on removing this malware? I know the big bad Borg-rosoft is supposed to be evil... but Apple is the one causing me grief right now. Even the spyware removal stuff is having trouble removing this piece of compost from my machine.
Why you guys bothered to go with this dated, incompatable and otherwise awful software is beyond me. WM player runs fine on Macs.
Once again. Is it possible to remove this damned thing from my browswer without having to remove it entirely from my system? I do want the ability to view movies without Apple screwing up my machine to get even with Big Bad Billy-Boy.

Uh, have you tried running "Set Program Access and Defaults" and selecting what /you/ want? Heck you could even disable access to iTunes/QT Player. I think most media players (and browsers) try to get you to set /them/ as the default during installation. If you re-install WMP or Real Player, they will probably take over as well. Also, no, WMP does NOT run adequately on the Mac. It is several versions behind and as such does not do any of the current WMP formats (esp DRM encumbered ones).

More research... QTplugin.ocx is the bad boy. Finally found some doc that told me to
regsvr32 /u "the path to the ocx"...
Once I did that, HyjackThis was able to safely remove it. Now time to go and see if I can still see movies within SL...
(couple minutes later)
WHOOPIE! Thank god-it for other nerds documenting this stuff.

There is also an unofficial way to install Quicktime without most of the coorporate gunk. Might want to give it a try... Quicktime Alternative. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/QuickTime_Alternative.htm

I don't know any other software that takes over in the avaricious way that Quicktime does. I banned it from my computer, which led to problems with those sites which insist on using it. But then I discovered the Quick Time alternative, which is better behaved. Just Google that phrase and you will find it.

Apple talks out of both sides of their mouth. They knock Microsoft's tactics, and then turn around and practice the same tactics themselves.

Even a dedicated Mac fan such as I has to agree that Apple's tactics with Quicktime and iTunes are kinda low. But I'm also going to say that Windows Media Player is just about the most god-awful thing I've ever come across for streaming video over the internet. Half the time it freezes up mid-stream never to start again, and since it doesn't cache the downloaded video, you need to start all over again.

Get it directly from the original source... http://www.codecguide.com/I highly recommend the Mega Codec Pack, which includes Quicktime Alternative.

Quicktime =/= evil

Let's face it. If you don't know what you are doing any piece of software that presents you with a wall of options at install can screw things up. And there are far worse ones than Quicktime. If you take the time to just deselect various options then Quicktime will not affect other software or hijack file types. Having QT working correctly on Windows PCs is not a threat, and can really enhance various web sites functionality. I wish it were the same for WMP on Macs. At least Apple is creating truly cross-platform technology, with PC and Mac versions being pretty much identical.
You may disagree. It is your choice, but don't complain about software hijacking and use it as justification to bash Apple. It is a simple option to reset file handling for certain types through file preferences. If you know what you are doing. If you don't then just ask someone. Or more simply, uninstall and reinstall QT and look for the options at install.

Agreed with DoctorMike.
QuickTime is really nice. And it does not attach itself to any MIME at all if you don't let it. Just take a little closer look while you're installing things. It even save cache of playing movies and let me reply without reloading everythings, better than both WMP and Real.
Try installing RealPlayer. That's what I say horrible. I dunno, Real just take horribly too much resource with those cute unneccessary interface.

From: Selador Cellardoor I don't know any other software that takes over in the avaricious way that Quicktime does. RealPlayer and Windows Media Player both do. Of course if you're using one of those, you might not have noticed.
