I'm trying to edit a few items that a friend is wearing (hair, etc), as they are a bit of a noobie and don't find the axis and other adjustments easy.
However, I get no edit box when right-clicking on the item they are wearing. I do get the edit options if something is on the ground and I have build permissions, but not if they wear it. I experimented with a more 'technically aware' friend and he created a new simple box, set all the obvious permissions under 'edit' and 'preferences', and also gave me general edit permissions (the bottom of those 3 options in the friend's list).
I've searched the forums and web about this and the only suggestion I've found is to ensure I don't have the option under 'tools' set which would only allow me to edit my own items.
If I go into edit mode of something I own, then click on the item the other person is wearing, the box goes blank. As I can edit the same object on the ground, there must be something about the fact they're wearing it that's locking me out. Surely though, that's what the bottom box of those options in the friend's list is for?
Any clues please? Thanks.

I've often been wondering about that too.... maybe if your friend's shape is copy/transfer...you could ask for a copy and then adjust the hair etc on yourself....then just give everthing back to your friend and those things that you adjusted should fit perfectly.

Hmmm...Yea, that is an excellent idea! Thank you Pocket. I've just been (until SL went down again) modifying a necklace for her, after she placed it on a temporary box I rezzed for her. Of course I've totally messed it up now as it's made of 4 prims, is too thin, and I'm rotating all the parts and....Oh I've given up! LOL. Anyway, your idea will help for when I buy her another necklace! Hehe. Cheers.

Anything you do that to has to be transferable. Most hair is not. A lot of jewelry is though.

Well I just bought the girl in question a nice new necklace after I ruined her last one, and it fits perfectly without needing adjusting. Also she's fixed her own hair, so for now, all is good.

It sure would be nice if we could do that, though. More than once I've given a friend something I made, and because they were new to SL, teaching them how to adjust where the hat sat or the skirt fell, etc, was a long-drawn-out process!

Adjusting Another Av's Prim Attachments.
01-06-2008 13:40
I have often wondered why LL has never made this a feature. I would absolutely LOVE it!
If it could be set up like the 'mod rights' feature, so you get a warning message saying "Icantfixattachment: is giving you mod rights over worn prim attachments" then a accept/reject option.
Would be SO helpful for no transfer items such as hair. So many times I've seen ppl with bald spots showing or their necklace up to their chin, I just wanna grab it, stretch it, and yank it down!
It's great to teach people, I've done it many times, but I agree with what Cyn said, "it's a long-drawn-out process", and when you aren't up to playing 'mentor' with your time in SL, it can make for a cranky situation.

Hi Cyn and Xaria. Well I obviously agree with what you both said. I could have done with some editing help myself at first, but at least I was forced to learn how to edit properly. SL's knowledge base make it quite clear that it IS possible - At least that is how it comes across, but obviously they can't mean it that way. I won't quote the exact phrase but they say something like, if you select that option in your friend's list, "You can edit their object just as if you were them". It doesn't state, "....unless they are wearing them". Well I thought that you could edit someone else's objects if they set the edit options to allow others too - So why is there this other option I wonder? Hmmm. "It's obviously so I can adjust the objects they're wearing", I naturally assumed. LOL. So I wasted hours of research on this, and 2 friend's time, experimenting with various options to try and get it working. LOL. Oh well, such is life. I'll stop moaning now and crawl back to my little cave and twiddle with my new freebie watches, trying to make the 'bling' disappear even though I've deleted the script and it still blinds me furiously. LOL.

Cheers. I've given up on wearing jewellery....just to darn fiddly!!!! As someone else just mentioned, my idea won't really work with hair but probably only with transferrable objects..... but it's a start.

One option, if the prim part needs to be re-sized or retextured, is to have them give you mod rights, then they stand on a pose stand wear the item, then they 'drop' the attachment. Not detach, but drop. It should then appear on the floor near them. You can now edit the item to manually move it back into place on their stationary (because of the poe stand) body, and make your adjustments. Then they need to take it back into their inventory, and wear the altered copy. They may still need to rotate and reposition it, but the resizing/retexturing changes that you made with it temporarily positioned over their body should still be there.

Also a great idea Ceera, I've done that before on several occasions. Just one problem with doing this, not all people have 250 prims free on their land to drop hair, jewelry, etc. I suppose one could always use a sandbox, but that just makes for more trouble just for simple adjustments; well adjustments to me that may seem 'simple' but to a new resident may seem near impossible to figure out, and why a feature like this could be very useful. There are some people in SL who just can't or don't build, edit, or work with prims period. Yes I'm a firm believer that everyone should try everything at least for a while, but most people are able to realize what they can or cannot handle doing in SL in not too long of a time period. It's like me with sculpties...it may be a long long time before I can learn to properly utilize a 3-D program to actually make a decent looking sculptie, and in the meantime I don't necessarily NEED to know how to make one, so I don't make myself a 'stressed-out basket case' everyday trying to make them. I know other people can, and have made them, and I can purchase them, or have them custom made if needed. Same with attachments, people buy them because they like the product, or because they simply can't make it themselves, and when they get it, and it doesn't fit just the way they would like it to they become frustrated. It's not the content creator's fault, because we all know there are 5mil different shapes running around SL, and it's impossible to make attachments to fit every type of shape, but why not make it just a little simpler for residents, content creators, and not to mention mentors, who spend hours telling someone how to use SL's building/edit tools, only for them to say "here why don't you just take it and fix it for me". I've found myself in that situation more times than I can count on one hand. lol I would sit for hours messing with the 'legos of SL', but some people just don't have the time or patience, or have found they 'just don't have it' when it comes to building, or maybe they aren't in SL to create content and just want to 'play'. There's not a thing wrong with any of these reasons, and why a feature like this could make SLife easier for them.
