Hi

I have upgraded a machine from XP to Vista today.

One of the main reasons for doing this was the amount of times SL has been crashing and bad lag recently. Additionally all sound when SL was running was crackling.

Most of the upgrade went very smoothly, just needed some updated drivers for some things.

However, on running SL, Vista wanted to downgrade the "desktop experience" by changing the colour depth and the "Aero" effects. In addition FPS within SL were around 2-3 :(

After uninstalling and reinstalling the Nvidia drivers, with no success, I finally solved the problem :) It seems it was Quicktime forcing Vista into a lower graphics mode on load (I noticed the desktop "downgraded" each time it said "initialising quicktime".

The solution? Remove quicktime and reinstall the latest version. SL now loads in normal graphics mode with Aero running, and FPS are far better too.

I've also installed Vista Service Pack 1 (the beta version), so I'll let you know how it works :)

Good info, thx. I could not understand why I used to have Aero downgrade but not now...but I did a complete reinstall of SL including QT recently & this explains it.

Also interested to hear how you get on with Vista SP1 Beta :)

Yes, although file copies and unziping seems faster now - as does startup and menus...

If file accesses are working faster, it *may* increase the speed in SL (working with the cache)

Just a quick update for you:)

Everything is running just great... I did however notice that because Vista uses more system memory, if I had things running in the backgrund, things went a little slow - so after adding an extra 1GB of memory, it's all working great (and seems fore reliable and less crashes than i had under XP)

The only small issue is that on rare occations some textures get a "rainbow" flashing effect - but this is down to the graphics card drivers and I can easily live with :)

Here is the spec I'm using:

Vista Premium 32bit
2GB of DDR PC2700 RAM
Nvidia Geforce 6600GT (128MB) graphics card
AMD Athlon 2800+ CPU (Barton) with 512MB L2 cache
