Canada is a big place (bigger than the US), I would imagine there are hundreds of completely different ISP's in every province/city. Kind of depends where the newbie is.

no usually on two or three that are worth anything.

If you can get DSL, get Telus, Bell, Aliant, etc Dependent on where you live.

If cable is the only thing available, get that, thats usually shaw or rogers.

I live in rural SW Ontario, and I use Rogers cable, and am very happy with both their service and the connection I get. For an extra $5/month over the standard rate, I get (advertised) 6 Mbps down and 800 kbps up. In practice, I often (when connected to a fast enough server) get speeds of around 350 KBytes per second download. I can be in SL with all three of my kids (each on their own machine) playing Runescape, all at the same time, with no appreciable decline.
