Is there some kind of facial parameter mismatch or loss between what's displayed in Editing Appearance mode and what's visible during normal rendering?

In trying to configure an exact facial expression, I've come to realize that what I set up so meticulously is never actually visible during normal avatar rendering --- it's as if some facial muscles are being set up in Appearances but then never used.

Or is this an artifact of the default animation? (If so, any suggestions?)
