I downloaded the patch, and the new client and both of them are giving the following error on start up:

"Display settings have been set to recomended levels based on your system requirments"

The message is on a dispaly window on a black background and it is not loading the log in screen. The client crashes after 5 seconds or less.

I cannot see this error on the Knowledge Base, and have checked the video card settings and tried a few other programes and 3d enviroments with no problems. I have unistalled the client and downloaded it from the site today and still get the same error.

Suggetions on how to fix this?

At the login screen, click preferences, go to the graphic tabs and uncheck any reference to checking hardware or graphics card, click ok and restart the client.

That would be great, but as I previously put down, it doesnt get to the log in screan, it crashes before it reaches that point. In fact now its not even giving me the message about the display settings its just crashing.

When you uninstall the programme using the control panel, make sure you delete all the files in C:/My Documents - Documents and Settings -<your PC login name> - Application - Second Life, afterwards. Then use a Registry cleaner to remove all references in the registry, reboot your PC to remove elements in the OS cache, then clean install Second Life.

None of that worked either, but for future reference, updating the drivers worked. It boggles me how harse SL is on graphics, only time Ive had to check graphical drivers for playing a game, this system isnt that old.

As I have stated many times on these forums, the 'minimum specifications' for running SL successfully have changed, but the ones stated by LL have not over the years, which at best is missleading.

For instance they state the minimum ram=256mb for XP, XP alone will struggle to run with that small amount of ram and Microsoft state that 512mb is the minimum!

SL does not support many graphic cards or family of chips, yet many still manage to run the game, all be it with technical issues.

The default settings of the Client, so often updated, do not befit a stable useable system and should be changed to show minimum settings to use the game, leaving it up to each user to turn up settings to meet the higher standards of their individual systems over and above the minimum requirements. This would eleviate many of the issues posted on the forums.

Due to the many improvements in the rendering engine/pipelines in the new/latest releases of the client, which although improves the experience for a small minority of users that have suitable systems to take advantage of those improvements, is automatically turnned on by default, has caused users who's system would run the previous Client, now find themselves with and unstable platform.

I posted this elsewhere, but I was having same problem.

Updated to new Nvidia drivers today (2nd May release date).

At one point SL hung, as it did before, told me it wasn't responding, but then managed to recover. Didn't see any message about the driver recovering in that instance.

Still not perfect, but an improvement. Or might have been a whole new problem....
