When I start SL now the screen goes black in the SL window before it gets to the login page.
I've uninstalled, delted the cache, delteted the settings file, restarted the computer, modem, and router.

Not much of a fix, but did you try it with the -login param added to the shortcut? That might let you bypass the login screen.
