I want to basically take a dvd that i have and view it with someone through SL. Now I havn't found a DVD to Quicktime (*.mov) software but im sure there is some out there. I was wondering about converting it to an .avi then putting it in a flash file. Wondering if that would work or not. If not, then how would I go about doing this? Would I need a streaming server host anyway? It is not to make like a movie theather in SL or anything like that, just to watch what i want with friends.

Is there a tutorial how to do this? Maybe with some software suggestions? Any help would be apprciated

Of course we're talking about non-copyrighted DVD's that you're allowed to copy onto your hard drive, right? Thought so.

Okay, there are many different programs you can use. I'd sugest using DVD Decrypter to pull the VOB files off the DVD onto your hard drive. After that, here's a little application I found just by googling "vob to mpeg". No idea how good or bad it might be, but it seemed simple enough.

So I would only need to convert it to a mpeg? Is there a certain type?

You need to use an MPEG4 format that successfully loads and plays in the Quicktime Player.
