General PC Question: My Mouse Wheel!

This question has nothing to do with SL. :o Here goes: I was surfing the internet earlier and was fooling around with the Num Lock button while completing a fill in field online. I'm not sure which buttons I pushed or the sequence thereof, but suddenly my mouse wheel doesn't scroll any more. I can still click with it, and get that little scrolly thing that lets me scroll by moving the whole mouse, but the wheel itself doesn't scroll. I've looked all through Mozilla's controls, my Control Panel (Windows XP) but nothing has changed. I double checked my mouse drivers, and they're all up to date. Help! I never realized until just now how dependant I am on the wheel.

Did you check the mouse settings under Control Panel?

There's a tab for the wheel function.

Yes I did. That tab doesn't actually let you turn off the wheel. It only lets you specify how much to scroll when you DO scroll, which I can't do anymore.

Does your mousewheel still work in other programs like Windows Explorer or IE? Maybe its a Mozilla plugin that suddenly got in the way. The easiest way to try out would be to create a new Mozilla profile by either using the link for it at "start ->programs -> Mozilla (or Firefox or whatever)" or opening the commandprompt, starting Mozilla (or Firefox) with "Mozilla -P" (or "Firefox -P";). If the mousewheel starts to work again with the new profile, then the old one just decided to mess up or one of the addons is at fault (which you could disable one by one to see which one of those it is).
I hope that helped ^^;;

P.S.:
Or its something even simpler, like the little movement sensor for the mousewheel decided to break or got dirty, so i cant read out anything anymore.

No it doesn't work with any programs now. I've rebooted the puter as well. I just tried your suggestion about the new profile in Mozilla, and that didn't help. How do I clean the mouse wheel? Is it kosher to take the mouse apart?

Hey, whee! I got it to work! I took off the bottom of the mouse, blew the dust out of it, put the bottom back on, and then unplugged and replugged the USB into the computer. Thanks! I hadn't even thought that it might be dirty, LOL.

I wouldn't take it apart........try a can of compressed air from your local office supply store or Best Buys.

And, you know, mice are not that expensive........might be time to replace it. :)

It is, as long as you remember where all the parts you may remove from the mouse were ^^;; I did this several times and even washed a mouse (and a keyboard) together with my BF in his bathtub ^^;; (keys can get pretty eww after a while ^^;). Even that did no harm to the keyboard and mouse and they were shiny and smelled nice afterwards ^^;; Just dont forget to dry everything properly *lol* In your case using a brush to clean the components inside the mouse would already do, i guess. there arent all that many components inside a mouse and theres hardly anything that could go wrong ^_^

I type too slow *lol* great I was able to help and the mouse is working again ^_^ And i had the chance to share my computer parts cleaning story ^^;;
